Au travers d’une revue de la littérature sur la théorie des coûts de transaction et les approches basées sur les core competencies, cette thèse propose une théorie de l’externalisation dont le fondement empirique repose sur une étude de cas dans le contexte de la maintenance aéronautique de l’Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre, que nous considérons en tant que HRO. L’externalisation est ainsi définie de manière dynamique au travers d’une approche évolutive fondée sur quatre grandes variables : la propension à externaliser, la rentabilité économique du projet, la cardicité et l’appréciation de l’apprentissage organisationnel. Se reposant sur approche originale de praticien chercheur et par l’utilisation d’une méthode d’analyse innovante, nous démontrons l’applicabilité de cette théorie et sa possible utilisation à l’ensemble des HRO en vue d’une généralisation plus marquée. Outsourcing is an age-old phenomenon that has not been described in operational terms by any theory. Through a review of the literature on transaction cost economics and an approach based on core competencies; this thesis proposes a theory of outsourcing, which has an empirical basis in a case study on aircraft maintenance in l’Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre (the French Army Aviation), and which we regard as HRO (High Reliability Organization). Outsourcing is therefore defined dynamically through an adaptive approach based on four main variables: the outsourcing propensity, the economic profitability of the project, the cardicity and the organizational learning. Based on an original practitioner-researcher approach and by using an innovative method of analysis, we demonstrate the applicability of this theory and its possible uses for all HROs with a view to a more widespread application.
