<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="fr">Le présent travail étudie le procédé rhétorique gréco-romain du « discours figuré » aux premiers siècles après J.-C.et son utilisation dans les écrits de l’apôtre Paul. Le « discours figuré » (logos eschêmatismenos, oratio figurata) consiste à sous-entendre un message que l’on n’ose exprimer avec franchise. Il est motivé soit par le souci de bien séance, soit par le souci de sécurité face au danger. Il était codifié par les manuels de rhétorique, destinés à l’élite, mais constituait également une méthode communicative populaire utilisée par les autres strates sociales. L’utilisation populaire du « discours figuré » rend pertinente l’étude de ce procédé chez un auteur comme l’apôtre Paul, qui n’a sans doute pas bénéficié d’une formation rhétorique au plus haut niveau. Après avoir proposé une méthodologie pour l’identification du « discours figuré » dans les écrits pauliniens, l’étude examine le message délicat communiqué à travers des allusions dans trois passages (1 Co 1-4, 1 Co 9 et Rm 1-2). Le « discours figuré » permet à Paul de communiquer d’une manière implicite des critiques, des requêtes et des avertissements qu’il ne peut exprimer ouvertement.</dcterms:abstract>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">This study examines the Graeco-Roman rhetorical technique of « figured speech » during the first centuries A.D. and its use in the writings of the Apostle Paul. « Figured speech » (logos eschêmatismenos, oratio figurata) consistsof communicating by innuendo a message that the speaker cannot express frankly. It is motivated either by the concern for appropriateness or the desire to avoid danger. It was systematised by the rhetorical handbooks, whichwere intended for the elite, but it also constituted a popular form of communication used at other social levels. The popular use of « figured speech » makes the study of its presence relevant for the writings of an author such as the Apostle Paul, who probably did not benefit from rhetorical training up to the highest level. After proposing amethodology for identifying « figured speech » in Paul’s writings, the study analyses the sensitive message communicated by allusion in three passages (1 Cor 1-4, 1 Cor 9 and Rom 1-2). The technique of « figured speech » allows Paul to communicate implicitly criticism, requests and warnings that he does not dare to express openly.</dcterms:abstract>
