<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">It is now commonly believed that the revival of dance in the 20th century was driven by a so-called "modern" and then "contemporary" movement, which invented its own choreographic language, dispensing with any booklets or recourse to literature. Classical dance would perpetuate an age-old tradition in reverse, by reviving the ballets of the repertoire, its libretti and its choreographic vocabulary inherited from the past. However, against all expectations, alongside the famous revivals of classical ballets such as Giselle, Cinderella, The Nutcracker or Romeo and Juliet, among others, which are so popular with the public, another classical dance is being invented, in the shadow of contemporary dance and the "grand repertoire". This so-called "neo-classical" dance is distinguished in particular by the personal way in which its choreographers reconnect with literature, often without the intermediary of a librettist. Inspired by their readings, the neo-classical choreographers give birth to authentic creations, without any antecedent in the history of dance. A global phenomenon of significant scale is emerging, both in terms of the number of choreographic works involved together with its chronological and geographical extension : several hundred literary ballets have certainly been created in the West since the 1940s. Against the popular belief that classical dance does not create anything new, we maintain that a classical creation is emerging in 20th century dance, notably thanks to the use of literature.</dcterms:abstract>
