Dès l’armistice, des mesures provisoires sont prises pour remettre en place le culte dans les secteurs dévastés. Le lancement des chantiers définitifs nécessite toutefois l’adoption de textes de loi prenant en compte l’ampleur des ruines, mais également certains particularismes propres à cette région. Le relèvement des églises alsaciennes est coordonné par deux coopératives qui mettent en synergie les acteurs de la reconstruction avec l’administration et les responsables du diocèse afin d’envisager ces travaux de manière globale. Architectes et artisans de tous horizons proposent des projets parfois novateurs, souvent plus classiques, en tirant profit de certaines innovations héritées du conflit. Au lendemain de leur reconstruction, ces édifices forment un ensemble architectural hétéroclite perpétuant la mémoire du conflit. Alsace's religious heritage was heavily damaged during the Great War, which was used by the propaganda services of both sides. From the armistice, provisional measures were taken to restore worship in the devastated areas. However, the launch of the final building works required the passing of laws taking into account the extent of the ruins, but also certain particularities specific to this region. The reconstruction of the Alsatian churches was coordinated by two cooperatives, which brought together the administrators and the people running the diocese, in order to consider these works in a global manner. Architects and craftsmen from far and wide put forward a wide range of propositions. Whilst somewhere quite outside the beaten path, most were more orthodox in their approach yet all were heavily influenced by certain innovations inherited from the conflict. In the aftermath of their reconstructions, these buildings now form a heterogenous architectural ensemble that perpetuates the memory of the Great War.
