En s’appuyant sur 40 sites, 1374 sépultures et 2370 objets, trois axes sont abordés : la typochronologie, l’étude de la position des objets dans les sépultures et le rapport de ces objets au sexe et/ou au genre du défunt. Par ces trois axes, il a été possible de questionner le rôle de la ceinture dans les pratiques funéraires, mais aussi leurs aspects symboliques, culturels et sociaux. L’apport de datations radiocarbones a permis de proposer une typochronologie qui dépasse la limite généralement retenue qui se situe dans la première moitié du VIIIe siècle. L’analyse des positions des objets a permis de mettre en évidence une pratique particulière qui consiste à déposer la ceinture sur les jambes du défunt. Enfin, l’étude du lien entre les garnitures de ceintures et le sexe et/ou le genre a mis en évidence de possibles influences d’outre-Rhin. This study focuses on belt fittings from the early Middle Ages discovered in a burial context in the southern Upper Rhine region. On the basis of 40 sites, 1374 burials and 2370 objects, three axes are addressed : typochronology, the study of the position of the objects in the burials and the relationship of these objects to the sex and/or the gender of the deceased. Through these three axes, it has been possible to question the role of the belt in funerary practices, but also their symbolic, cultural and social aspects.The contribution of radiocarbon dating has made it possible to propose a typochronology that goes beyond the generally accepted limit of the first half of the 8th century. The analysis of the positions of the objects has made it possible to highlight a particular practice which concists of placing the belt on the legs of the deceased. Finally, the study of the link between the belt fittings and the sex and/or gender of the deceased revealed possible influences from across the Rhine.
