En prenant en compte tout à la fois le traité de Bonaventure et d’autres sources médiévales – bonaventuriennes, clariennes et iconographiques –, notre étude veut montrer comment les commanditaires de l’œuvre et l’artiste se sont approprié ces sources pour en proposer une interprétation iconographique spirituelle et méditative mettant en œuvre une verticalité conduisant le spectateur du terrestre au céleste et reposant sur l’exaltation de la figure de la moniale à travers les modèles féminins majeurs que sont Claire d’Assise et la Vierge. Pacino di Bonaguida’s Albero della Vita, a Florentine wood painting dated from the beginning of the XIVth century and ordered by the Clares of Monticelli, seems to have been directly inspired from Bonaventure’s Lignum Vitae in which the Seraphic Doctor recounts Jesus’ life in forty-eight meditations. Taking into account Bonaventure’s treatise and other medieval sources – bonaventurian, Clare’s related and iconographic – our study will show how the patrons and the artist of this work of art appropriated these sources to themselves to give a spiritual and meditative iconographical interpretation, putting up verticality that conducts the spectator from earth to heaven and based on the exaltation of the nun’s figure through the main female models that are Clare of Assisi and the Virgin.
