Dans les 13 sermons sur la nativité étudiés dans cette thèse, Augustin propose une approche originale, par la participation au mystère, au moyen de la prédication. L’auditoire, sans grande culture, oblige le grand orateur, philosophe et théologien à un discours simple. Il souligne surtout la difficulté liée au caractère indicible du mystère qui évoque deux naissances du Christ : engendré du Dieu et né de Marie. Malgré le paradoxe, Augustin y voit une évidence et propose un retour à la Parole de Dieu qui comporte sa propre interprétation. Ses catégories philosophiques, ses arguments rhétoriques, les concepts empruntés ou forgés, tout cela est placé sous le regard de la Révélation d’un Dieu qui s’abaisse pour relever l’homme qu’il a créé à son image et ressemblance. Les propositions théologiques d’Augustin prédicateur situent l’intelligibilité de l’Incarnation dans la contemplation de l’humilité du Verbe de Dieu. The mystery of the Incarnation causes many misunderstandings. In the 13 sermons on the nativity studied in this thesis, Augustine proposes an original approach through participation in the mystery, by means of preaching. The audience, without much culture, obliges the great orator, philosopher and theologian to a simple speech. Above all he emphasizes the difficulty linked to the inexpressible character of the mystery which evokes two births of Christ: begotten of God and born of Mary. In spite of the paradox, Augustine sees this as self-evident and proposes a return to the Word of God which has its own interpretation. Its philosophical categories, its rhetorical arguments, the borrowed or forged concepts, all this is placed under the gaze of the Revelation of a God who stoops down to raise up the man he has created in his image and likeness. The theological propositions of Augustine the preacher situate the intelligibility of the Incarnation in the contemplation of the humility of the Word of God.
