Souvent considérée comme spectacle « populaire », elle ne trouve que rarement, en France, la faveur des grands esprits. Quand bien même les travaux portent sur le genre cinématographique, ils se centrent sur les œuvres de l’âge classique (1933-1957), et privilégient les approches idéologiques plutôt qu’esthétiques, réduites au contexte de création. Au prisme de West Side Story (1957 et 1961), nous tentons d’aller au-delà ; si cette production est un succès de l’entertainment américain, elle révèle aussi la facture de Jerome Robbins, figure majeure de la danse américaine. Cette thèse croise donc les génomes robbinsiens – la « pré-histoire » de West Side Story –, et leurs réminiscences activées par l’œuvre. L’objectif est de prouver que cet opus symbiotique, relayant les principales caractéristiques des danses américaines, s’inscrit en tant que supra-genre du musical, en réfractant les concepts esthétiques « savants » de la postmodernité. La première partie met en avant la polysémie des formes chorégraphiques (danses traditionnelles, sociales, modern dance, jazz, danse académique et « danse musicale »), et présente le pouvoir des corps dansants (opéras, Broadway, Hollywood). Le second volet met l’accent sur le parcours artistique et personnel du chorégraphe, et l’analyse de West Side Story au regard des enjeux de son actualisation esthétique et poétique, dans le contexte des années 1950-60. The American musical comedy, a transdisciplinary art, intertwines dance, music, theatre and/or cinema. Often seen as a “popular” show, it rarely considered a topic of study by the great minds in France. Even though research does reflect on the cinematic genre, it focuses mainly on works from its classical age (1933-1957), and favour ideological rather than aesthetic approaches, while limiting them to their creative context. Through the prism of the musical West Side Story (1957 and 1961), we attempt to go further; if this production is success of American entertainment, it also reveals the workmanship of Jerome Robbins, a major choreographer in the history of American dance. This thesis therefore crosses the Robbin genomes - the “pre-history” of West Side Story -, and their reminiscences activated by the work. The objective is to prove that this symbiotic opus, relaying the main characteristics of American dances, fits as a musical supra-genre, by refracting the “learned” aesthetic concepts of post-modernity. The first part highlights the polysemy of choreographic forms (traditional, social dances, modern dance, jazz, academic dance and “musical dance”), and presents the enunciating power of dancing bodies (operas, Broadway, Hollywood). The second part emphasizes the artistic and personal path of the choreographer, and the analysis of West Side Story with regard to the challenges of its aesthetic and poetic actualization in the American context of the 1950s and 60s.
