Notre étudepréconise la revalorisation du rôle de l'« école Burney » dans l'histoire littéraire en tant qu'oeuvrecollective unifiée par une signature « pseudo-anonyme », à la fois singulière et plurielle, mais surtoutpar un jargon romanesque qui témoigne de stratégies de résistance coopératives. Parce que cesromans brillèrent par leur « médiocrité », dans tout ce que le concept peut avoir de positif, nousaffirmons que ces écrivaines formaient une société de goût dont l'étude informe nos connaissancessur l'autorité littéraire, les pratiques d'anonymat, et le marché littéraire au tournant du XIXe siècle.Ces romans dits « mineurs » jouent collectivement un rôle majeur, non seulement dans ledéveloppement du roman mais aussi dans notre compréhension de l'auctorialité féminine. This thesis brings together the novels published by a lady between 1778 and 1820, i.e. from thepublication of Frances Burney's Evelina to Sarah Harriet Burney's Country Neighbours. What madethe "Burney brand" so attractive to aspiring female novelists over a short period of time when ninenovels in the "Burney style" were published between 1785 and 1791? This research calls for arevaluation of the role of the "Burney school" in literary history as a collective work unified at onceby a singular and plural pseudo-anonymous signature and by a "novelistic slang" that testifies tocooperative strategies of resistance. By demonstrating that these novels were "mediocre", in apositive sense, this thesis argues that these writers formed a society of taste whose study informs ourknowledge of literary authority, anonymity practices, and the literary marketplace at the turn of the19th century. This research thus argues that these so-called "minor" novels collectively play a majorrole, not only in the development of the novel but also in our understanding of female authorship.
