Elle propose une analyse du métier d’étudiant international, qui vise à croiser, de manière diachronique dans le champ de la pédagogie universitaire, des histoires de vécus d’étudiants congolais, dans des contextes nationaux et universitaires, qui recouvrent, des réalités parfois radicalement différentes d’un étudiant à l’autre et d’un pays à l’autre. La question qui se pose avec force, ici, est celle de l’affiliation des étudiants de la République démocratique du Congo (Kinshasa) et de la République du Congo (Brazzaville) à l’Université de Strasbourg, de leur réussite, de leur échec en rapport aux questions relatives à la sociabilité étudiante et à la construction d’un nouveau rapport aux études pour les uns et d’un réapprentissage du métier d’étudiant pour les autres, ceux qui ont déjà poursuivi des études supérieures dans les deux Congo. Nous sommes partis du constat selon lequel beaucoup d’étudiants congolais, qui venaient poursuivre leurs études en France, sortent de l’Université de Strasbourg sans diplômes et peu d’entre eux retournent dans leur pays d’origine. Il s’agit de comprendre ce phénomène et d’essayer de voir comment et pourquoi ils échouent. Pourquoi choisissent-ils, en majorité, de partir en France ? Comment s’y déroulent leurs études et surtout comment réapprennent-ils le métier d’étudiant ? Notre échantillon est constitué de 50 personnes avec lesquelles nous avons mené des entretiens semi-directifs. Nous avons établi une liste de variables et de facteurs explicatifs de l’abandon ou de la réussite afin de repérer leurs effets sur l’intégration sociale et académique considérant que ces deux types d’intégration sont liés entre elles : • L’échec universitaire de notre public de décrocheurs peut-il s’expliquer par la non-affiliation au métier d’étudiant mis en évidence par Coulon (2005) ?• Qu’est-ce qui distingue ceux qui demeureront étudiants de ceux qui échouent ? La motivation du voyage ? La diversité des parcours de départ (L M D ou Campus France) ? Les conditions de vie ? Le type de formation ? Le déficit d’intégration académique ou sociale ?• Quel est le poids des caractéristiques sociodémographiques sur leur décision ? • Quelles sont les stratégies d’affiliation au monde intellectuel mettent-ils en place ?• Pensent-ils retourner au Congo après l’université ? . Enfin, quel est le sens de ce "mouvement" vers l’étranger : s'agit-il d'une migration durable laquelle eût signifié une rupture avec le pays d'origine, ou plutôt d'un passage motivé par l'acquisition de diplômes français dont l'issue eût été le retour après l’université ? Telles ont été les interrogations de cette recherche où les publics, les carrières et les conditions de vie des étudiants se sont diversifiés et fractionnés, engendrant un éclatement des formes de l'expérience étudiant... This thesis in Educational Sciences follows on from work looking at the factors responsible for international students dropping out of school in France, the case of Congolese students dropping out of school at the University of Strasbourg. It proposes an analysis of the international student profession, which aims to cross-reference, in a diachronic way in the field of university pedagogy, the life stories of Congolese students, in national and university contexts, which cover realities that are sometimes radically different from one student to another and from one country to another. The question that arises forcefully here is that of the affiliation of students from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa) and the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) to the University of Strasbourg, their success and failure in relation to issues of student sociability and the construction of a new relationship to study for some and a relearning of the student profession for others - those who have already pursued higher education in both Congo. Formerly a French colony, the Republic of Congo is colloquially referred to as Congo Brazza as opposed to Congo Kinshasa or Democratic Republic of Congo, a former Belgian colony. Separated by the Congo River, the two capitals are 5 km apart. The level of higher education is deficient in both countries, and their recent political histories are marked by chronic instability and violence with negative consequences for teaching and education. The problematic of this thesis is partly related to our thesis work in Master II. At the time, we tried to carry out a kind of "introductory study" that is currently being pursued in our thesis. We started from the observation that many Congolese students, who came to France to continue their studies, leave the University of Strasbourg without diplomas and few of them return to their country of origin. It is a question of understanding this phenomenon and trying to see how and why they fail. Why do most of them choose to go to France ? How do their studies take place there and, above all, how do they relearn the student profession ? In order to validate the particularities of students who drop out, we have created 4 groups (15 dropouts, 15 graduates, 10 still students, and 10 new graduates). Our sample is made up of 50 people with whom we conducted semi-directive interviews. We drew up a list of variables and explanatory factors for dropping out or success in order to identify their effects on social and academic integration, considering that these two types of integration are interrelated: - Can the academic failure of our public of dropouts be explained by the non-affiliation to the student profession highlighted by Coulon (2005) ?- What distinguishes those who remain students from those who fail ? Motivation for the trip ? The diversity of departure routes (L M D or Campus France) ? The living conditions ? The type of training ? The lack of academic or social integration ?- What is the weight of socio-demographic characteristics on their decision ? - What are the strategies for affiliation to the intellectual world that they put in place ?- Do they plan to return to the Congo after university ? - Finally, what is the meaning of this "movement" abroad : is it a long-term migration that would have meant a break with the country of origin, or rather a passage motivated by the acquisition of French diplomas whose outcome would have been a return after university ? These were the questions raised by this research...
