Ce travail analyse les mutations dans la transmission et la pratique du savoir médical tibétain au Népal et montre que la variété des cadres de transmission favorise une diversification des rapports aux valeurs et à la pratique de la médecine tibétaine. Le mode de transmission plus formalisé du savoir médical tibétain, développé à partir des années 1990, diffère en effet du canal de transmission au travers de lignées médicales – jusqu’alors prévalant au Népal – et donne lieu à un troisième type de transmission « hybride », dans lequel le praticien, amchi, circule entre apprentissages formel et non formel. Les données ethnographiques recueillies, à partir d’un terrain dans un village du Bas-Mustang, mettent en avant les articulations entre les types de transmission, en explorant notamment les mutations entre deux générations d’une même lignée d’amchi. Outre la comparaison des pratiques, je mobilise une approche biographique fondée sur l’analyse du parcours de vie de chaque membre de la lignée, situant les amchi et leurs pratiques dans leur cadre social et temporel. Je rends aussi compte des divers modes d’intégration professionnelle des amchi, selon leur type de transmission et de pratique. Ces recherches mettent en avant les innovations dans les processus de transmission de la médecine tibétaine et les pratiques ultérieures, ainsi que les redéfinitions que peut entraîner l’apprentissage formel. Il interroge la position liminale de certains amchi et questionne les phénomènes d’hybridité qui résultent des rencontres entre amchi et Occidentaux.
This work analyzes changes in the transmission and practice of Tibetan medical knowledge in Nepal and shows that the variety of transmission frameworks favors a diversification of relationships towards the values and practice of Tibetan medicine. The more formalized mode of transmission of Tibetan medical knowledge, developed from the 1990s onwards, differs from the channel of transmission through medical lineages – the latter having previously prevailed in Nepal – and gives rise to a third type of "hybrid" transmission, in which the practitioner, amchi, circulates between formal and non formal learning. The ethnographic data collected, based on a fieldwork in a village in Lower Mustang, sheds light on the articulations between the types of transmission, by exploring in particular the mutations between two generations of the same amchi lineage. In addition to the comparison of the practices, I mobilize a biographical approach based on the analysis of personal life narratives of each member of the lineage, situating the amchis and their practices in their social and temporal context. I also account for the different modes of professional integration of the amchis, in relation with their type of transmission and practice. This research highlights innovations in the transmission processes of Tibetan medicine and subsequent practices, as well as the redefinitions that formal learning can favorize. It questions the liminal position of certain amchis and the hybridization phenomena that result from the encounters between amchis and Westerners.
