Les cliniciens et les chercheurs en psychiatrie sont confrontés à la difficulté d’accéder au fonctionnement cérébral. La rétine fait l’objet d’un intérêt croissant. En effet, du fait de son origine embryologique, elle appartient au système nerveux central avec lequel elle partage des similarités de fonctionnement. Notre travail explore l’ensemble du fonctionnement rétinien par électrorétinogrammes pattern, flash et multifocal avec une méthodologie reproductible et standardisée au cours d’un épisode dépressif caractérisé unipolaire non saisonnier. Comparativement aux témoins, les patients présentent dans la rétine centrale un hypofonctionnement des photorécepteurs et des cellules bipolaires. Au contraire, la rétine périphérique apparait hyperactive. L’étude de la rétine pourrait permettre le développement de biomarqueurs d’aide au diagnostic et au choix thérapeutique.
Clinicians and researchers in psychiatry are confronted with the difficulty of accessing brain function. The retina is of increasing interest. In fact, the retina belongs to the central nervous system because of its embryological origin and shares many similarities with the central nervous system. Our work explores the whole retinal function with pattern, flash and multifocal electroretinograms with a reproductible and standardized methodology in patients with a non-seasonal unipolar major depressive episode. Compared to controls, patients exhibit in the macula, a slowing down of photoreceptors and bipolar cells function. On the contrary, the peripheral retina appears hyperactive. The study of the retina could allow the development of biomarkers to help in the diagnosis of major depressive episode and the therapeutic choice.
