<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="fr">Le sommeil est régulé par un mécanisme circadien, un mécanisme homéostasique, et les effets de la lumière qui sont indirects, via le processus circadien, ou directs, indépendants de l’horloge. L’objectif de cette thèse était d’évaluer chez l’Homme par une approche transdisciplinaire les effets directs de la lumière sur la vigilance, les performances cognitives, l’humeur, le sommeil et les rythmes biologiques en fonction du niveau de pression homéostasique et du moment circadien de la journée. Ces travaux ont permis d’effectuer des études méthodologiques sur des paramètres du profil de sécrétion de la mélatonine afin d’apporter des recommandations. Nous avons également apporté de nouveau éléments de compréhension de la régulation de la tachypsychie, de certaines performances cognitives, de la mélatonine et du sommeil chez le sujet sain. De plus, nos données mettent en évidence un effet novateur de la lumière en démontrant qu’elle influence l’homéostat de sommeil. En conclusion, ces données permettent d’améliorer les connaissances sur la régulation du sommeil et des comportements associés, avec des applications sociétales et cliniques.</dcterms:abstract>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Sleep is regulated by three main processes, i.e. circadian, homeostatic and the effects of light. Light effects can be classified as indirect, through the phase shifting of circadian rhythms, or direct, in a circadian independant fashion. Based on a transdisciplinary approach, the aim of this thesis was to evaluate for the first time in Human the direct effects of light on alertness, cognitive performances, mood, sleep and biological rhythms as a function of sleep homeostatic pressure level and circadian time. This work allowed to address important methodological issues on melatonin monitoring, thus providing specific recommendations for research and clinical practice. We also bring new insights about the regulation of racing thoughts, several cognitive performances, melatonin and sleep in healthy young adults. Moreover, our results highlight a new effect of light as light exposure strongly influences the sleep homeostat. To conclude, these data greatly improved our understanding of photic regulation of sleep and behavior, with direct societal and clinical applications.</dcterms:abstract>
