La grâce est non seulement acquittement du pécheur mais « la nouveauté et la fidélité du don et du charme dans l’itération de la vie ». Les plantes représentent une manifestation primordiale de la grâce, les jardins une occasion privilégiée de la vivre. Cette affirmation est étoffée sur les plans biblique et herméneutique (expérience et immanence de la grâce). Elle est mise à l’épreuve sur le terrain dans six lieux ecclésiaux et non ecclésiaux. Un parcours historique retrace la grâce du végétal depuis la Réforme jusqu’à la théologie du XXe siècle (L. Ragaz) en passant par Rousseau, Goethe et Runge, Fontane, Loti et Ph. Robert (théologies explicites et implicites d’écrivains et de peintres). Une typologie provisoire est consacrée aux « variations de la grâce du végétal » (des phénomènes qui l’attestent et des motifs spirituels qui la confessent). The « grace of vegetal life » responds to a twofold deficit : first, a lack of theological attention to non human living beings, and second, a lack of vital charge of grace. Grace is not only the acquittal of the sinner but also «the newness and fidelity of gift and charm in the iteration of life». Plants represent a primordial manifestation of grace, and gardens offer a privileged opportunity to live it. This claim is confirmed on a biblical and hermeneutical level (experience and immanence of grace). It is tested in six places of practice, some related to church, others not. A historical review permits to trace back « grace of plants » from the Reformation onwards to 20th century theology (L. Ragaz). Rousseau, Goethe and Runge, Fontane, Loti and Ph. Robert (writers and painters) are important intermediate steps of this explicite and implicite theological tradition. In a provisional typology the « variations of grace of plants » are specified (phenomena attesting it and spiritual patterns confessing it).
