L’association « Vaincre la Mucoviscidose » s’est impliquée depuis trente ans pour en exposer le rapport bénéfices/risques, en faisant intervenir des patients greffés avec un témoignage optimiste, en s’appuyant sur des praticiens motivés. Cependant, la question de la légitimité éthique d’une association de patients se pose pour promouvoir une démarche thérapeutique qui dépasse le cadre strictement chirurgical. Quel caractère acceptable, quel apport humanisant peuvent être apportés par les membres de l’association, à commencer par les patients ? Sont abordées les questions de partenariat et de démocratie sanitaire participative, regroupant les concepts d’empowerment des patients regroupés en association, d’expertise expérientielle, d’éducation thérapeutique, de patient-ressource et formateur, le tout au service d’une thérapeutique éprouvée qui reste d’actualité, aux côtés d’options pharmacologiques prometteuses. Bilateral lung transplantation is emerging as the most promising intervention to treat cystic fibrosis, a respiratory disease which concerns 7,400 patients in France and 85,000 worldwide. The patients’ association “Vaincre la Mucoviscidose” has been involved for thirty years to expose the benefit/risk ratio for this delicate operation, by involving transplant patients with an optimistic testimony, and by relying on committed practitioners. However, the question of the ethical legitimacy of a patient association arises to promote a therapeutic approach that goes beyond the strictly surgical framework. What acceptability, humanizing and contribution can be attributed by the active members of the association, starting with the patients themselves? Among other things, questions of partnership and participatory health democracy are addressed, bringing together the concepts of empowerment of patients grouped together in association, experiential expertise, therapeutic education and patient-resource and trainer, all in service of a proven therapy that remains relevant, alongside promising pharmacological options.
