Elle consiste dans l’élucidation du besoin de croire et la clarification de son statut tant conceptuel que thématique, au carrefour des sciences humaines et des sciences religieuses : psychologie, sociologie, les neurosciences, sciences politiques, histoire des religions et not the least : théologie. Quatre parties la structurent précisément, relevant des registres épistémologique, scientifique, théologique et institutionnel. Sur chacun d’eux, est interrogé le besoin de croire en tant qu’il est un besoin et un besoin affecté au croire en général, au croire religieux en particulier. Parce que, comme le disait Paul Ricœur, il n’y a de religion que là où il y a des religions (Gifford lectures), notre approche intègre la question de la différence inter-religieuse en sollicitant dans leur singularité propre et selon une herméneutique délibérément centrée, les corpus des traditions du christianisme, du judaïsme, de l’islam et du bouddhisme. La compétence philosophique est alors sollicitée deux fois : en tant que l’histoire des idées philosophiques porte la trace de thématisations diverses du croire (comme besoin ou désir ou aliénation) et en tant qu’elle constitue une polarité critique à l’endroit des sciences positives qui s’en saisissent. Les expressions individuelles ou collectives du besoin de croire sont enfin analysées et interprétées dans leur inscription institutionnelle, fournissant ainsi autant d’éléments en faveur de sa validation conceptuelle et de son homologation philosophique. Our thesis falls within the disciplinary field of the philosophy of religion. At the crossroads of human sciences and religious sciences – such as psychology, sociology, neurosciences, political science, history of religions and theology – the thesis investigates the need to believe and its status both conceptually and thematically. The study is divided into four main sections which focus on the different registers: epistemological, scientific, theological, and institutional. Each section questions the need to believe both in general terms and in religious terms. Since Paul Ricœur argued that there is no religion except where there are religions (Gifford lectures), our approach integrates the question of the inter-religious differences by asking in their own singularity, and according to a deliberately hermeneutic-centered approach, the corpora of the traditions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. Philosophical competence is then called upon twice: inasmuch as the history of philosophical ideas bears the trace of various thematizations of believing (as a need or desire or alienation) and inasmuch as it constitutes a critical polarity towards the positive sciences which seize upon it. The individual or collective expressions of the need to believe are finally analyzed and interpreted in their institutional background, thus providing many elements in favor of its conceptual validation and its philosophical approval.
