Le capucin Benoît de Canfield (1562-1610), dans sa Règle de perfection, offre une synthèse originale de l'enseignement traditionnel de l'Église sur la vie spirituelle : il réorganise tout cet enseignement autour de l'unique point de l'exercice de la volonté de Dieu. Il s'agit, quelle que soit la situation, de discerner et d'accomplir la volonté du Père comme l'a fait Jésus, dans la puissance de l'Esprit Saint. Par conformité de sa volonté à celle de Dieu, l'âme s'unit avec son céleste Époux Jésus-Christ et conçoit spirituellement Jésus. Ainsi, par la mise en œuvre de cette règle très simple de la volonté de Dieu, la perfection de la vie chrétienne, dans la vie active et contemplative, est accessible à tout baptisé, quel que soit son état de vie. Pour le capucin anglais, profondément enraciné dans la tradition spirituelle et intellectuelle de son Ordre, l'homme-Dieu, Jésus-Christ, dans le mystère de son Incarnation et de sa Passion, est le centre, l'alpha et l’oméga de toute la vie spirituelle et par suite de la Règle de perfection.
The Franciscan Capuchin friar Benet of Canfield (1562-1610), in his Rule of Perfection, offers an original synthesis of the traditional teaching of the Church concerning the spiritual life: he organizes his teaching around the one point of the will of God. Whatever the situation, one must discern and accomplish the will of the Father, as Jesus did in the power of the Holy Spirit. Through the conformity of its will to the will of God, the soul is united with its heavenly bride Jesus, and also spiritually conceives Jesus. Thus, through the implementation of this very simple rule of the will of God, the perfection of christian life – in active and contemplative life – is offered to any baptized person, whatever his state of life would be. For the English capuchin friar, deeply rooted in the spiritual and intellectual tradition of his Order, the God-man Jesus Christ is, in the mysteries of his Incarnation and Passion, the center, the alpha and omega of all spiritual life and so of the Rule of Perfection
