Zénobie est connue pour être l’une des figures féminines les plus célèbres de l’Antiquité tardive. Elle était reine de Palmyre au IIIe siècle, et voulut devenir impératrice de Rome dont son royaume faisait partie. Mais nous ne savons pas ce qui lui advient exactement après sa chute. Car peu après sa disparition, les traditions orientales et occidentales qui vont s’emparer de son destin extraordinaire feront d'elle une légende à part entière. Notre thèse entend étudier les métamorphoses subies par ce personnage au cours des siècles dans diverses aires géographiques. Nous verrons en effet comment la légende de Zénobie va s’enrichir de multiples facettes qui mettent en lumière toute la plasticité du personnage et permettent aux différents auteurs de refléter les préoccupations théologico-politiques de leur temps.
Zenobia is known as one of the most famous female figures of late antiquity. She was queen of Palmyra in the third century and wanted to become empress of Rome, which her kingdom was part of. However, we do not know what will exactly happen to her after her fall. Shortly after her death, the Eastern and Western traditions that took hold of her extraordinary destiny made her a legend in her own right. Our thesis intends to study the metamorphoses undergone by this character over the centuries in various geographical areas. We will see how the legend of Zenobia will be enriched by multiple facets that highlight the plasticity of the character and allow the different authors to reflect the theological-political concerns of their time.
