Cette thèse aborde les journaux dans la diversité de leurs ancrages géographiques et idéologiques afin de saisir le processus de construction et de diffusion d’une culture politique à l’ère des révolutions. L’étude s’appuie sur un corpus composé de plus de 80 journaux publiés de part et d’autre de la frontière entre 1789 et 1804. En examinant les stratégies éditoriales mises en œuvre par les acteurs qui ont fait exister ces journaux, reconstituant les relations qu’ils ont nouées avec les institutions aux pouvoirs, enfin en observant les manières dont ils ont véhiculé l’information politique, cette thèse propose de mettre au jour l’un des vecteurs de politisation dans un contexte transfrontalier où les enjeux linguistiques ont joué un rôle déterminant. Majoritairement germanophone, la presse du Rhin supérieur observée dans sa forme et dans ses contenus apparaît comme un outil de politisation qui dépasse le cadre du jacobinisme. Elle donne à voir la diffusion d’une culture politique qui se présente le plus souvent comme fidèle à la politique menée par les gouvernements successifs et ne véhicule que très rarement une pensée contestataire. The newspapers printed in the Upper Rhin during the Revolution have for a long time mainly been studied for their ability to document the Jacobinism carried by about fifteen editors based in Strasbourg and Mainz and who were visible because of their political commitment. This thesis approaches the newspapers in the diversity of their geographical and ideological roots in order to grasp the process of construction and diffusion of a political culture in the era of revolutions. The study is based on a corpus of over 80 newspapers published on both sides of the border between 1789 and 1804. By examining the editorial strategies implemented by the actors who brought these newspapers into existence, by reconstructing the relations they established with the institutions in power, and by observing the ways in which they conveyed political information, this thesis proposes to bring to light one of the vectors of politicisation in a cross-border context where linguistic issues played a determining role. The Upper Rhine press, which is mainly German speaking, appears to be a tool for politicization that goes beyond the framework of Jacobinism. It shows the dissemination of a political culture that is most often faithful to the policies of successive governments and only very rarely conveys a protesting thought.
