Les domaines scientifiques, en particulier la médecine, reconnaissent leurs propres limites concernant la compréhension de la maladie mentale, partant de ses attaches morales. Selon les philosophes et les moralistes, le regard médical s’impose compte tenu du facteur biologique et de l’interdépendance entre le corps et l’esprit. L’histoire de la psychopathologie se caractérise par la multiplicité des points de vue, notamment celui médico-philosophique, ce qui s’avère indispensable à l’approche de la maladie mentale. « Folie », « maladie de l’âme », « maladie mentale », « aliénation mentale », la variété des termes qui qualifient cette maladie spécifique, et l’hésitation sur l’emploi d’un terme plutôt qu’un autre dénote l’incompréhension et la difficulté que les penseurs anciens et modernes rencontrent pour définir la maladie mentale et cerner son fonctionnement. Étudiée selon des paradigmes différents, la maladie psychique rend compte d’une véritable crise épistémologique qui se manifeste dans l’entremêlement des registres et dans la différence dans l’ordre du savoir, ce qui a donné lieu durant des siècles à des débats stériles et à des conflits inutiles. De ce fait, la curabilité du malade mental- souci majeur et préoccupation principale- est passée désormais au second plan, l’idée prédominante qui s’est enracinée progressivement étant la non curabilité de la maladie psychique. Maladie ou bien perversion morale, maladie ou précarité individuelle, le flou sur sa nature et sur sa genèse a donné lieu à un va-et-vient entre la reconnaissance de la morbidité d’une part, et le jugement moral sur le malade psychique de l’autre. Il en résulte une méconnaissance du traitement à adopter, et un choix d’exclusion de ces êtres condamnés au retrait. Un phénomène qui ne cesse de s’amplifier, tant il est vrai que la maladie mentale constitue un véritable problème, chargé de nombreux enjeux sociaux, politiques, civiques et humanitaires, et dont les répercussions dépassent le cadre strictement individuel et menacent la paix collective et le vivre-ensemble. The particularity of this research project lies in its relationship to the areas of interiority and individuality which cannot be defined by specific standards. Scientific fields, particularly medicine, recognize their own limitations in understanding mental illness, based on its moral roots. According to philosophers and moralists, the medical perspective is essential taking into account the biological factor and the interdependence between the body and the mind. The history of psychopathology is characterized by the multiplicity of points of view, notably the medical-philosophical one, which proves essential to the approach to mental illness. "Madness", "disease of the soul", "mental illness", "insanity", the variety of terms which qualify this specific illness, and the hesitation over the use of one term rather than another denotes the incomprehension and the difficulty that ancient and modern thinkers encounter in defining mental illness and understanding its functioning. Studied according to different paradigms, psychological illness reflects a real epistemological crisis which manifests itself in the intermingling of registers and in the difference in the order of knowledge. As a result, the curability of the mentally ill - a major concern and main concern - has now taken a back seat, the predominant idea which has gradually taken root being the non-curability of mental illness. Illness or moral perversion, illness or individual precariousness, the vagueness about its nature and its genesis has given rise to a back and forth between the recognition of morbidity on the one hand, and the moral judgment on the mentally ill on the other. the other. The result is a lack of understanding of the treatment to be adopted, and a choice to exclude these beings condemned to withdrawal. A phenomenon which continues to grow, as it is true that mental illness constitutes a real problem, fraught with numerous social, political, civic and humanitarian issues, and whose repercussions go beyond the strictly individual framework and threaten collective peace and living together.
