Paul Etoga, premier évêque du Cameroun et de l’Afrique française noire, est étudié dans une démarche interdisciplinaire croisant histoire, théologie, ecclésiologie voire droit canonique. Formé et ordonné prêtre, puis évêque, dans un contexte de crise politique et ecclésiale – domination coloniale, travaux forcés, lutte indépendantiste, discrimination entre clergé occidental et autochtone – il est le symbole d’un pasteur courageux et bienveillant qui sut concilier tradition et exigences évangéliques. Libre et désintéressé, il milite pour la reconnaissance du clergé indigène et la dignité humaine dans une conscience du « politiquement apolitique ». Son nationalisme est de visée eschatologique. Dans un pays et un continent où l’Église donne l’impression de se mettre à genoux devant le politique, il incarne la dignité sacerdotale et épiscopale dans un sacerdoce évangélique et engagé. Son témoignage ecclésial et politique constitue une substantifique exemplarité pour l’Église catholique au Cameroun et en Afrique.
Paul Etoga, first Bishop of Cameroon and Sub-Saharan Africa of French colonisation ruling is studied in interdisciplinary way including theology, ecclesiology, even canon law. Trained and ordained Priest, and later Bishop, in a political and ecclesial context of crisis – due to colonization ruling, independence struggle, discrimination between local and European clergy – he is a symbol of a courageous and caring pastor who succeeded in reconciliating tradition and evangelical requirements. Free and selfless, he campaigns for the recognition of local clergy and human dignity in the way of “politically apolitical” awareness. His nationalism was of eschatological aim. So, in a country and continent in which Church appears going down on its knees in front of the political power, he embodies sacerdotal and episcopal dignity in the way of evangelical priesthood and commitment. His ecclesial and political testimony is of substantive exemplary nature for the Catholic Church in Cameroon and Africa.
