Celui parfois désigné par l’appellation « viking metal » réunit des formations qui véhiculent des représentations de la figure du viking et de la mythologie nordique à travers leurs productions discographiques. Certaines d’entre elles bénéficient d’une médiatisation et d’une réception en France par l’intermédiaire des magazines spécialisés. À partir de l’analyse d’un corpus de presse et d’entretiens réalisés avec des journalistes métal, cette thèse montre comment, en mobilisant un imaginaire du Nord médiéval, ces acteurs élaborent une représentation médiatique différenciée des groupes de métal viking. Après deux chapitres qui s’intéressent à la place de la culture nordique dans le travail journalistique et aux paramètres qui favorisent la mobilisation de l’imaginaire viking, trois études de cas sont consacrées à la médiatisation des groupes Bathory, Enslaved et Amon Amarth. Since its emergence in the late 1960s, metal music has branched out into many subgenres. The genre sometimes referred to as ‘Viking metal’ includes bands that convey representations of the figure of the Viking and of Norse mythology in their records. Some of them benefit from media coverage and a reception in France through the specialized press. Based on the analysis of a press corpus and of interviews with metal journalists, this research shows how these actors mobilize a vision of the medieval North to develop a distinctive media representation of Viking metal bands. The first two chapters are dedicated respectively to the place of Nordic culture in journalistic work and to the parameters that are conducive to the mobilization of Viking references. Three case studies on the press coverage of the bands Bathory, Enslaved and Amon Amarth follow.
