Au XIXe siècle, le marin constitue l’un des maillons essentiels du développement des sociétés occidentales modernes ; il est pourtant rarement l’objet d’une représentation artistique. Le romanmaritime répare cette injustice. Le parti pris réaliste du genre est au service d’une intrigue fictionnelle qui place en son centre la lutte de l’équipage, contre des dangers extérieurs au navire,ou en proie à des conflits internes. Dans ce huis clos extrême, l’autorité du capitaine tout-puissantest célébrée ou remise en question. La notion de pouvoir est néanmoins aussi étudiée du pointde vue du matelot. Dans une première approche, la rébellion du marin contre une autoritéoppressive s’incarne dans la figure du pirate, symbole du rêve utopique et fantasme littéraire.Dans une seconde approche, l’étude des conditions de vie à bord du navire recherche desmanifestations de contre-pouvoirs, parmi lesquelles le sens de la communauté révèle son importance. Un pouvoir créateur vient redoubler cet esprit de corps : fondation d’une culturecommune, il compose un espace d’affranchissement du cadre coercitif et de la fatalité d’une viemisérable.
In the 19th century, the sailor was one of the main links in the development of modern Westernsocieties, yet he was rarely the subject of artistic representation. The maritime novel remediesthis injustice. The genre's realist bias is at the service of a fictional plot that focuses on the crew'sstruggle against external dangers and internal conflicts. In this extreme closed-door setting, theauthority of the all-powerful captain is either celebrated or questioned. However, the notion ofpower is also examined from the sailor's point of view. In a first approach, the sailor's rebellionagainst oppressive authority is embodied in the figure of the pirate, symbol of utopian dreamsand literary fantasy. In a second approach, the study of living conditions aboard ship looks formanifestations of counter-power, among which the sense of community reveals its importance.This esprit de corps is reinforced by a creative power: as the foundation of a shared culture, itcreates a space of freedom from the coercive framework and fatality of a miserable life.
