Le but de cette thèse est d’étudier le phénomène historique des révoltes qui ont éclaté contre les Grands Rois de l’empire perse (559 – 329 av. J.-C.). Chaque rébellion est examinée séparément afin de détecter ses causes et ses conséquences et d’analyser son déroulement. Les conclusions établies sont ensuite étudiées de manière synthétique pour éclairer les aspects généraux et diachroniques du phénomène en question : les facteurs sociaux, économiques et politiques conduisant au déclenchement des mouvements centrifuges et des disputes successorales, les initiatives prises par les rebelles et les loyalistes pour réaliser leurs objectifs politiques, les rapports entre les monarques achéménides, l’aristocratie perse et les élites locales, et l’impact des soulèvements sur les satrapies affectées et l’empire achéménide lui-même à long terme.
The aim of this dissertation is to study the historical phenomenon of the revolts that broke out against the Great Kings of the Persian Empire (559 – 329 B.C.). Each rebellion is examined separately, in order to detect its causes and consequences and to analyse its principal events (mainly of political and military character). The established conclusions are then juxtaposed to each other with the objective of illuminating more general and long-term aspects of the phenomenon in question: The social, economic and political factors leading to the outbreak of centrifugal movements and succession disputes, the initiatives taken by rebels and loyalists alike, in order to achieve their particular goals, the relations between the Achaemenid monarchs, the Persian aristocracy and the local elites, and the impact of the uprisings upon the affected satrapies and the Achaemenid Empire itself.
