En quatre-vingts ans d’histoire politique, Jules Humbert-Droz connut un parcours très sinueux. Né dans un milieu d’ouvriers horlogers, protestant, pasteur et socialiste, il adhéra à la social-démocratie, rejoignit le camp communiste, et s’engagea dans le pacifisme. Il gravit les échelons du monde communiste et devint rapidement secrétaire de l’IC, puis cadre du KPS, avant de retourner à la social-démocratie. Son parcours prit, alors, les accents du transfuge politique. Ainsi, l’écriture de cette biographie de Jules Humbert-Droz s’inscrit à la croisée du renouvellement des études en socio-histoire et de la biographie contextuelle. Ceci nous permet de replacer pleinement notre personnage dans les cadres de l’expérience, afin d’analyser les mécanismes de décision, son rôle social et les pratiques culturelles en dehors du champ politique. Ainsi, les ressorts de l’engagement, l’expression des radicalités et la construction de la carrière militante demeurent au cœur de cette étude.
In eighty years of political history, Jules Humbert-Droz has followed a very winding path. Born into a family of watchmaking workers, Protestant, pastor and socialist, he joined social democracy, joined the Communist camp and became involved in pacifism. He rose through the ranks of the Communist world and soon became secretary of the IC, then an executive of the KPS, before returning to Social Democracy. His career then took on the overtones of a political defector. Writing this biography of Jules Humbert-Droz is therefore at the crossroads of the renewal of socio-historical studies and contextual biography. This allows us to place our character fully within the framework of experience, in order to analyse decision-making mechanisms, his social role and cultural practices outside the political arena. In this way, the motivations for commitment, the expression of radicalism and the construction of an activist career remain at the heart of this study.
