Malgré son importance culturelle, elle serait aujourd’hui une forme de ménage minoritaire. Cette thèse vise donc à déterminer la place de la famille indivise dans l’Inde contemporaine. Elle s’articule autour de deux axes. Le premier s’intéresse à la géographie de la famille indivise en prenant en compte à la fois ses structures de ménage particulières et son système de parenté imprégné de fortes normes de genre. Une approche spatiale est adoptée pour expliquer la diversité des pratiques familiales à travers le pays. Le deuxième axe examine l’importance de la famille indivise dans les trajectoires familiales actuelles des couples indiens. Il explore les facteurs qui divisent l’unité résidentielle et s’interroge sur l’articulation des notions de ménage et de famille dans le contexte indien. Pour ce faire, cette thèse s’appuie sur une approche principalement quantitative à partir des données de grandes enquêtes nationales, mais aussi sur des entretiens semi-directifs réalisés lors d’une enquête de terrain multi-site. As an intergenerational and patriarchal family system, the joint family is at the heart of gender and generational relations in India. Despite its cultural importance, the joint family would be a minority household type nowadays. The aim of this thesis is to assess the place of the joint family in contemporary India. It is divided in two parts. The first studies the geography of the joint family by considering both its household structure and its kinship system embedded by strong gender norms. A spatial approach is used to explain the diversity of family practices across the country. The second part looks at the importance of the joint family in the current living arrangements of Indian couples. It highlights the factors that divide the residential unit and explores the relationship between the notions of household and family in the Indian context. To do this, this thesis mainly uses a quantitative approach based on large national databases on the one hand, and on the other, semi-structured interviews on a multi-sited fieldwork.
