Alors que l’Inde souffre sous le règne de l’Empire britannique, l’Europe est ravagée par deux guerres mondiales. Ces crises n’empêchent pourtant pas les écrivains indiens et européens de se rencontrer, de s’écrire et de se lire. Cette thèse examine comment cinq auteurs – Rabindranath Tagore, Romain Rolland, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells et Stefan Zweig – dépeignent dans leurs œuvres les conflits psychologiques et politiques de leur période, à travers le devenir des personnages de roman et de théâtre. L’analyse des représentations du nationalisme et des expériences des personnages en temps de crise dans dix-huit textes laisse voir les nombreux parallèles entre les paysages politiques et les mouvements littéraires en Inde et en Europe durant l’entre-deux-guerres. En faisant dialoguer les œuvres bengalies, françaises, irlandaises, anglaises et autrichiennes, cette étude comparatiste montre dans quelle mesure les cinq écrivains répondent aux débats transnationaux de l’époque sur le personnage de fiction ainsi que sur le nationalisme. The first half of the twentieth century witnessed great political upheaval in India and Europe. As India suffered under the rule of the British Empire, Europe was torn apart by two world wars. However, these crises did not prevent Indian and European writers from meeting, corresponding and reading one another’s works. This doctoral thesis examines how five authors – Rabindranath Tagore, Romain Rolland, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells and Stefan Zweig – depict the psychological and political conflicts of their time through the portrayal of the fate of characters in their novels and plays. The analysis of the representations of nationalism and of the characters’ experiences in times of crisis in eighteen works reveals the numerous parallels between the political landscapes and the literary movements in India and Europe during the interwar period. By establishing a dialogue between Bengali, French, Irish, English and Austrian works, this comparative study shows the extent to which the five writers responded to contemporary transnational debates about the character in fiction as well as nationalism.
