À l’instar de Platon qui l’établit en une analogie du Bien, du Juste, du Vrai et du Beau dans La République, de nombreux poètes ne cessent de renégocier la relation entre le soleil et l’absolu. L’astre tout-puissant prend une nouvelle tournure avec Nietzsche, dont la pensée se diffuse en France dès les années 1890 : la mort de Dieu s’accompagne du « crépuscule » de la métaphysique. Qu’advient-il de la poésie et de ses idoles lorsque l’ancien soleil se couche et dévoile son caractère trompeur ? Loin de se réduire à une étude thématique, ce travail envisage le soleil comme un opérateur privilégié pour explorer les enjeux tant poétiques que philosophiques de la crise de la transcendance – dont il interroge le retentissement chez trois poètes majeurs du xxe siècle : Apollinaire, Valéry et Ponge. The sun, a symbol of truth, the absolute and even the divine in Western thought, has become a central motif in metaphysical representations in both philosophy and poetry. As Plato, who establishes it as an analogy of the Good, the Just, the True and the Beautiful in The Republic, many poets have renegotiated the relationship between the sun and the absolute. This all-powerful star takes on a new dimension with Nietzsche, whose thought begins to spread to France from the 1890s: the death of God is therefore accompanied by the ‘twilight’ of metaphysics. What becomes of poetry and its idols when the ancient sun sets and reveals its deceptive nature? Far from limiting itself to a thematic study, this work considers the sun as an ideal vessel for exploring both the poetic and philosophical issues at stake in the crisis of transcendence – the repercussions of which are examined in three major poets of the twentieth century: Apollinaire, Valéry and Ponge.
