Bien que les auteurs se montrent pleinement conscients des limites de la photographie — points débattus depuis l’invention du médium au XIXe siècle et qui continuent d’évoluer — ils ont néanmoins accordé à la photographie une place importante dans leur vie et leur œuvre. Cette contradiction manifeste est explorée à travers trois thèmes distincts mais complémentaires qui émergent de leurs œuvres. À travers un corpus d’œuvres littéraires, ainsi que de « photo-textes » qui juxtaposent photos et textes, cette étude emploie plusieurs approches méthodologiques, alliant l’analyse textuelle, visuelle et photo-textuelle. Le rôle ambivalent de la photographie dans leurs œuvres, tant dans sa fonction représentative que dans son usage, positionne Hermans, Morris et Tournier comme des figures du modernisme tardif. This thesis offers a comparative analysis of the interactions between literature and photography in the works of three twentieth-century authors: Willem Frederik Hermans (1921-1995), Wright Morris (1910-1998), and Michel Tournier (1924-2016). Despite the authors’ clear awareness of photography’s limitations—points of enduring debate since the medium’s invention in the nineteenth century that continue to evolve—they nonetheless accorded photography an integral place in their lives and work. This apparent contradiction is explored through three distinct yet interconnected themes that emerge in the authors’ work. By examining a corpus of literary works, alongside “photo-text” works that explicitly juxtapose photos and text, this study employs a range of methodological approaches, combining textual, visual, and photo-text analysis. The ambivalent role of photography in their work, both in its representational function and in its use, positions Hermans, Morris, and Tournier as late modernist authors.
