<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="fr">Ce travail s’intéresse au recueil d’emblèmes Emblemes (1635) de Francis Quarles et a pour objet de montrer comment l’ouvrage se donne à lire comme un itinéraire spirituel, en passant par l’étude de jalons essentiels : le corps, le cœur, l’œil et l’âme, envisagés à la fois sous un angle théorique mais aussi, et surtout, théologique. La dimension spirituelle du recueil constitue ainsi le cœur de notre travail, tout en révélant l’originalité d’une œuvre qui puise son inspiration dans de multiples traditions. De ce fait, nous proposons d’analyser les Emblemes telle une mosaïque, faite de morceaux épars mais non hétérogènes. Nous souhaitons finalement montrer que, dans son recueil, Quarles met en scène une véritable herméneutique de la quête du divin, où le visible et l’invisible, le charnel et le spirituel s’affrontent et se répondent sans cesse, invitant le lecteur à déchiffrer et à (re)lire les mêmes images et les mêmes textes jusqu’à comprendre finalement que l’essentiel ne réside pas dans la destination, mais dans le cheminement même.</dcterms:abstract>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">This PhD dissertation devoted to Francis Quarles’ emblem book Emblemes (1635) aims at showing how the work can be read as a spiritual journey, through the study of key milestones: the body, the heart, the eye, and the soul, considered from both a theoretical and a theological perspective. The spiritual dimension of the collection is thus at the heart of our study, while revealing the originality of a work that draws its inspiration from multiple traditions. Therefore, this research proposes to analyze Emblemes as a mosaic, made up of scattered but not heterogeneous pieces. Ultimately, this dissertation shows that, in his collection, Quarles presents a true hermeneutics of the quest for God, where the visible and the invisible, the carnal and the spiritual constantly clash and respond to each other, inviting the reader to decipher and (re)read the same images and texts until they finally understand that the essential lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself.</dcterms:abstract>
