Les pères missionnaires jouèrent un rôle de médiateurs au sein du triptyque Missions – Gouvernement – École. La politique coloniale allemande et française, ainsi que le travail missionnaire au Togo par la Société du Verbe Divin et la Société des Missions Africaines (SMA) seront mis en avant, mettant en perspective deux « localités » bien distinctes, que sont l’Alsace et le Togo, et qui ont connu plus ou moins simultanément une gouvernance allemande puis française, ainsi que le conflit 1914-1918 et ses conséquences, notamment en ce qui concerne la politique scolaire et linguistique. La figure du Père alsacien, membre de la SMA, et le cas spécifique de l’Alsace au sein de cette société missionnaire française seront un objet d’étude central de ce travail, soulevant la question du statut de l’individu subalternisé et celle portant sur la perception de l’Autre, plaçant ainsi le Togo et l’Alsace sur un plan proche. Cette double perspective, Togo – Alsace, conduit à exprimer un jeu entre « localité » et « globalité », en regard avec le concept de « colonialité ». The 19th century and early 20th century saw a proliferation of missionary societies, particularly in France and Alsace. Missionary priests played a mediating role within the triptych of Missions – Government – Schools. German and French colonial policy, as well as missionary work in Togo by the Society of the Divine Word and the Society of African Missions (SMA), will be highlighted, putting into perspective two very distinct ʽlocalitiesʼ, Alsace and Togo, which experienced German and then French governance more or less simultaneously, as well as the 1914-1918 conflict and its consequences, particularly with regard to school and language policy. The figure of the Alsatian priest, a member of the SMA, and the specific case of Alsace within this French missionary society will be a central focus of this work, raising the question of the status of the subalternised individual and that of the perception of the Other, thus placing Togo and Alsace on a similar footing. This dual perspective, Togo – Alsace, leads to an exploration of the interplay between ʽlocalityʼ and ʽglobalityʼ, in relation to the concept of ʽcolonialityʼ.
