Cette thèse propose d’examiner un genre musical populaire, le Schlager, en République Démocratique Allemande (RDA), à partir d’un corpus d’archives et de chansons. Le Schlager est analysé sous l’angle de son intégration dans la politique culturelle du régime sous la forme du « Schlager socialiste », de son instrumentalisation politique et de sa réception par le public. L’étude explore les processus de production, mettant en lumière les rapports de force entre les artistes, les producteurs, et les autorités. L’analyse des paroles met en évidence une inscription du genre dans sa continuité historique, mais également son adaptation au nouveau contexte politique. Du point de vue de la réception, le Schlager a pu représenter un refuge émotionnel et contribuer à la création d’un sentiment de « chez-soi » (Heimat) chez les auditeurs.
This thesis examines the popular musical genre, Schlager, in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), based on a corpus of archival material and songs. Schlager is analysed with regard to its integration into the regime’s cultural policy in the form of ‘socialist Schlager’, its political instrumentalisation, and its public reception. The study explores the production processes, highlighting the power relations between artists, producers, and the authorities. Analysis of the songs’ lyrics demonstrates how the genre evolved within its existing historical continuity but also adapted to the new political context. From the point of view of reception, Schlager may have represented an emotional refuge that helped create a sense of ‘home’ (Heimat) for its listeners.
