Accès aux médicaments Grâce à leur capacité à traiter une série d’affections allant des infections respiratoires courantes aux soins post-opératoires, les antibiotiques peuvent être considérés comme une « infrastructure » qui contribue au maintien du bien-être de la société. Bien que cette infrastructure comporte de nombreux éléments qui lui permettent de fonctionner, cette thèse n’en évalue que trois : la composante antibactérienne de la liste des médicaments essentiels de l’OMS (qui sert de moyen d’accès à des antibiotiques efficaces), la filière des antibiotiques en tant que facette de la création de nouveaux antibiotiques et de leur distribution éventuelle, et enfin la chaîne d’approvisionnement en antibiotiques en tant que méthode distincte garantissant que la distribution a lieu. Cette thèse analyse la manière dont ces trois éléments font partie de cette infrastructure, leur évolution historique depuis les années1980 et leur état de fonctionnement actuel à l’horizon 2023. Thanks to the ability of antibiotics in addressing a range of ailments from common respiratory infections through post-operative care, antibiotics may be considered as an ‘infrastructure’ that contributes to holding up societal well-being. Although there are many components to this infrastructure that enable it to function, this dissertation assesses only three: the WHO's antibacterial component of their Essential Medicines List (which serves as an access vehicle for effective antibiotics, the antibiotic pipeline as a facet of new antibiotic creation and eventual distribution, and finally: the antibiotic supply chain as a distinct method of ensuring that distribution take place. This dissertation analyzes how these three components serve as parts of this infrastructure, how they have historically evolved since the 1980s, and what their current state of functioning is as of 2023.
