Ce travail montre comment la « croissance », née comme un objet de gouvernement, s’est métamorphosée en un sujet gouvernant. La notion et le chiffre de la croissance ont été construits par des économistes et fonctionnaires « modernisateurs » à partir de la fin des années 1940 en France. Ce concept économique a été conçu pour penser une politique économique interventionniste. Son chiffre a été élaboré pour réaliser des objectifs de production d’Etat. Les quantifications de la croissance se transforment ensuite entre les années 1960 et 1980. Le chiffre de la croissance passée acquiert une solidité plus forte. Les objectifs de croissance d’Etat sont progressivement abandonnés au profit de prévisions se voulant plus « réalistes ». L’objet planifié devient alors un sujet dont l’évolution autonome s’impose de plus en plus aux acteurs économiques et à l’Etat. Cette métamorphose de la croissance est le produit des transformations du champ bureaucratique et de la position qu’y occupent les fonctionnaires chargés de la chiffrer et gouverner. « Economic growth » is central in representations of the economy. This PhD dissertation investigates the history of the notion and figure of growth in France. It shows how « economic growth », constructed as an object of government, has metamorphosed into a governing subject. This process is labelled governmental alienation. The notion of growth and the growth figure were constructed by economists and civil servants during the late 1940s and 1950s in France. This economic concept was invented to conceive an interventionist economic policy. Its figure was used to set state production targets. From the 1960s to the 1980s, growth figures underwent transformations: past growth figures became more solid, and state growth targets were gradually abandoned in favor of more « realistic » forecasts. The planned object then became a subject whose autonomous evolution increasingly is a constraint for the State. This metamorphosis is the product of transformations of the positions occupied, in the bureaucratic field, by the civil servants who describe, quantifie and try to govern it.
