Objet polymorphe, s’adaptant à son public et ses objectifs, la confrérie a su répondre aux besoins religieux des contemporains. En tant que groupes, elles sont le miroir de la société et des interactions qui la régissent. Dans l’esprit de charité chrétienne, certaines confréries ont offert de l’aide aux pauvres ou au moins à leurs membres dans le besoin, ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives pour l’histoire de l’assistance. Phénomène tant rural qu’urbain, le mouvement confraternel toucha l’ensemble de la région. Ce travail met en évidence le rythme d’apparition des confréries et l’importance qu’a pris ce mouvement, englobant toutes les couches de la société, reflétant les pratiques tant religieuses que sociales des contemporains. Elles apparaissent aussi comme d’incontournables relais pour les autorités. Un corpus archivistique original fourni, confronté à la bibliographie sur le sujet tant du côté allemand que français, permet de mettre en avant les spécificités des confréries alsaciennes dans un cadre chronologique long allant du IXe siècle au Concile de Trente. Brotherhoods are the subject of this study, at the intersection of religious and social history within the geographical framework of medieval Alsace. A multifaceted entity, adapting to its audience and objectives, the brotherhood was able to meet the religious needs of contemporaries. As groups, they reflect society and the interactions that govern it. In the spirit of Christian charity, some brotherhoods offered assistance to the poor or at least to their members in need, opening up new perspectives for the history of assistance. A rural as well as an urban phenomenon, the confraternity movement affected the entire region. This work highlights the rhythm of the emergence of brotherhoods and the importance that this movement took on, encompassing all strata of society, reflecting the religious and social practices of contemporaries. They also appear to have been essential intermediaries for the authorities. A rich original archival corpus, compared with the bibliography on the subject on both the German and French sides, highlights the specific characteristics of Alsatian brotherhoods in a long chronological framework going from the 9th century to the Council of Trent.
