Cette transition s’est faite étape par étape dans des guerres sanglantes avec des légions commandées par des hommes dont le nom a parfois été oublié. Cette thèse a pour objectif de retrouver les détenteurs de l’imperium militiae qui l’ont utilisé afin d’étendre le territoire romain. L’usage de l’imperium militiae durant une bataille les différencie du simple magistrat qui possède également l’imperium. C’est à partir de cette différenciation que nous établissons ce qu’est un commandant et ce qui ne l’est pas. Après une identification des commandants par leurs actions, la thèse développe les états-majors qui les entourent, mais aussi les éléments de la formation du commandant et les relations qu’il entretient avec ses troupes, le Sénat et ses pairs. In the space three centuries, Rome transformed from a small city barely managing to control Latium into a power dominating the Mediterranean area. This transition made step by step through bloody wars with legions commanded by men whose names have sometimes been forgotten. This thesis has for objectives to identify those men who held the imperium militia and used it to expand Roman territory. The using of the imperium militiae during a battle separate them from the simple magistrate who owns the imperium too. It’s from this differentiation that we establish what a commander is or not. After identifying commanders by theirs actions, the thesis develops the general staffs that surround them, but also all the elements of the commander’s training and the relationship he maintains with his troops, the Senate and his peers.
