Théologie Arrachée à l’Empire romain par la conquête vandale, l’Afrique latine maintint une forte continuité culturelle et religieuse, grâce au développement de l’héritage augustinien et à la défense du christianisme nicéen. L’entretien d’exigences intellectuelles élevées se traduisit après la reconquête byzantine par la participation des Africains aux controverses relatives à la réception de Chalcédoine en Orient, qui préludèrent au deuxième concile de Constantinople (553). Parmi ces théologiens figure Ferrand de Carthage, disciple de Fulgence de Ruspe, dont le corpus épistolaire consacré aux problèmes théologiques contemporains témoigne de la continuité de la culture classique en Afrique et de la maîtrise intellectuelle des théologiens africains. Cette étude propose une nouvelle édition du corpus épistolaire de Ferrand de Carthage et une traduction française, enrichies d’une introduction et d’un commentaire replaçant ce corpus épistolaire dans son contexte historique, culturel et religieux. Torn away from the Roman Empire by the Vandal conquest, Latin Africa maintained a strong cultural and religious continuity, based on the development of the augustinian inheritance and the defence of nicean christianity. The upkeep of a high intellectual level is discernible in the contribution of the Africans after the Byzantine reconquest to the controversies regarding the reception of the synod of Chalcedon in the East, which preluded to the second synod of Constantinople (553). Among these theologians figures Ferrandus of Carthage, Fulgentius of Ruspe’s disciple, whose letter collection dealing with contemporanean dogmatic questions attests classic culture’s continuity in North Africa, as much as African theologian’s intellectuel mastery. This study offers a new edition of Ferrandus of Carthage’s letter collection, together with a French translation, enhanced with an introduction and a commentary puting this letter collection in its historical, cultural and religious context.
