L’étude propose une édition critique, la première traduction intégrale en italien, ainsi qu’un commentaire philologique et littéraire détaillé. Elle replace ces poèmes dans le contexte religieux complexe de l’époque d’Aldhelm marquée par la rencontre entre le christianisme irlandais et l’affirmation croissante de la romanitas ecclésiastique. Dans cette recherche les Carmina sont considérés comme des tituli occasionnels, héritiers de la tradition épigraphique romaine d’origine damasienne. Leur composition est étroitement liée à la construction, et donc à la consécration, de nombreuses églises et autels dans le royaume de Wessex, au sud-ouest de l’Angleterre. Les Carmina Ecclesiastica offrent un éclairage privilégié sur la vitalité religieuse du VIIᵉ siècle : la poésie y consacre les espaces sacrés, affirme leur identité et construit la mémoire communautaire. La tension entre usage pratique et ambition esthétique révèle un projet conscient d’unir érudition classique, références bibliques et finalité pastorale. This thesis offers an in-depth analysis of the Carmina Ecclesiastica by Aldhelm of Malmesbury, a prominent figure in seventh-century Anglo-Saxon culture. It presents a critical edition, the first complete translation into Italian, and a detailed philological and literary commentary. The study situates these poems within the complex religious landscape of Aldhelm’s time, marked by the encounter between Irish Christianity and the growing assertion of ecclesiastical Romanitas. In this research, the Carmina are examined as occasional tituli, heirs to the Roman epigraphic tradition of Damasian origin. Their composition is closely connected to the construction—and therefore the consecration—of numerous churches and altars in the kingdom of Wessex, in the southwest of England. The Carmina Ecclesiastica provide valuable insight into the religious vitality of the seventh century: poetry consecrates sacred spaces, affirms their identity, and constructs communal memory. The tension between practical function and aesthetic ambition reveals a conscious effort to unite classical learning, biblical references, and pastoral intent.
