<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">In this thesis we show the relevance of non-perturbative methods, such as the Wilsonian renormalisation group (RG) equations, for phenomenological purposes, in particular when the convexity property of the effective potential has to be taken into account. First, we study the instability problem of the Higgs sector of the Standard Model. Indeed, it is widely believed that the top loop corrections to the effective potential destabilise the electroweak vacuum and that, imposing stability, lower bounds on the Higgs mass can be derived as a function of the physical cutoff (scale of new physics). We show that this apparent instability is actually due to an extrapolation of the potential into a region where it is no longer valid. However, lower bounds for the Higgs mass can still be derived with the help of a new criterion dictated by the convexity property of the potential. If the scale of new physics lies in the TeV region, sizeable differences from the usual bounds are found. Our results also exclude the metastability scenario, based on the existence of a genuine instable effective potential. Then, we carefully analyze the conditions under which the quantum equation of motion can be used. The definition of the effective action involves asymptotic conditions often overlooked in phenomenological applications, especially in cosmology. By considering the quantum mechanical example of the double well potential, we show that the Wilsonian RG equation provides an accurate non-perturbative convex approximation to the effective potential that correctly describes the dynamical evolution of the system, while the commonly used one-loop potential (non-convex) fails to reproduce the exact results.</dcterms:abstract>
