Résumé(s) : Introduction : Home visits play a significant role in primary care and is essential for the care of certain patients who wish to remain at home. The changes in French and medical demographics will lead to tension in the healthcare services offered by general practitioners, especially regarding home visits. Thus, it seemed interesting to inquire about the perceptions, evolution, and perspectives of home visits among established and substitute general practitioners in AlsaceMethods: This is a qualitative study based on 14 individual semi-structured interviews conducted from September 2020 to January 2023 with a sample of established and substitute general practitioners in Alsace. Results : Most of the interviewed general practitioners believe that home visits remain a necessity and are unlikely to disappear, especially considering the aging population and the importance of caring for elderly and/or dependent individuals at home. However, our study reveals a paradox. Almost all doctors acknowledge that home visits offer lower technical quality and present numerous disadvantages that can hinder medical care. Nevertheless, these drawbacks are counterbalanced by the relational and informative elements obtained during the visits, which are not achievable during office consultations. The participating doctors emphasized the importance of comprehensive global patient care, the necessity of coordination among medical and paramedical professionals, and the need for multidisciplinary teamwork. One of the solutions that appears is task delegation, although it does not have unanimous support. Conclusion : Nowadays, home visits have a quite different place depending on the practice choices of each general practitioner. It is far from being fixed in the past and carries the stakes of optimizing our healthcare system. Home visits are amenable to reforms and modernization, especially with the aid of modern technologies that can make them more efficient for patients and less burdensome for doctors.
