From its origins as a muscular sphincter on the pharyngeal floor of a fish, to the elaborate musculo-cartilaginous framework of mammals, the larynx has been shaped over millions of years in response to environmental and social pressures. We understand how this organ, originally intended to protect the airways, also plays a role in respiration and phonation in vertebrates, sometimes at the expense of its primary function. We are the only living beings capable of speaking, thanks to the larynx and the control of our articulators by the central nervous system, which develops language to express our thoughts. Comparative anatomy, paleoanthropology, neuroscience and genetics help to explore questions about the origin of speech, some of which remain unanswered</dc:description>
