This thesis focuses on the events of the Arab Spring in Tunisia and Egypt through an American perspective. The Obama administration’s reaction is relevant to study since it was expected to bring a significant change in the American foreign policy towards North Africa and the Middle East. However, the American support to the democratic aspirations of the Arab people did not appear as obvious as anticipated. Furthermore, feelings such as fear and concern soon became dominant. Why and how did the communication of the Obama administration shifted from caution to enthusiasm, and then from excitement to concern? The aim of our thesis is to show that, if the United States’ reaction adapted to the evolving events of the Arab Spring, it kept respecting the American main strategic interests.
