In the 1980's, middle classes had left the cities to settle down in exurban areas. They wanted to get back to nature, have a family's house and flee from the polluted and congested city. This urban flight was condemned for its harmful effects on the environment : urban sprawl on the countryside, pollution, sealing of the grounds,... A part of the middle classes, affected by these critics and by the principles of sustainable development, gave up on the individual house and stood up for a concentration of the cities. The « participative housing » could be an expression of it. However, even if they remain in the city centres, the wishes of the inhabitants of this housing have not completely changed. The exurban house, as well as the participative housing, answer to the same profound aspirations : have a garden, known neighbours, a home to identify to,... Like the exurbans had fled the city, the inhabitants of the participative housing flee a urban way of life but without leaving the city.
